You may have noticed some activity starting to take place on the former Santa Clara school property. LTD purchased this property in 2015 with the intention of building a new transit station and now LTD is moving forward with development of the property.
LTD has engaged the architecture firm of Rowell Brokaw to manage the design and construction of the new transit station, which includes supervising the technical work that takes place prior to breaking ground. Geotechnical testing of the site will take place to determine what geological materials are present on the property. This will be done with a boring machine and is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, Oct. 24 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.
For more information about this project or to voice your concerns, please send an email to SCTransit@ltd.org or call 541-682-3240.
There are now three cover corp demonstrations at the Santa Clara Community Garden: one of peas and clover planted on bare ground, another planted in the new area for plots, and a third planted in an existing garden plot. This last one has many different mixes of cover crop seeds. There will be more information about the results in Winter months, and we plan to provide opportunities for gardeners to cover crop their own plots in coming months to improve the soil. Take a look at the cover crops as they grow. On November 3rd more soil improvement information will be presented when a Lasagna compost will be built. This workshop will be from 10 am to noon. Contact Peter (thurstop@gmail.com) for more information.
Santa Clara Community Garden regularly sponsors soil building workshops, including composting and cover cropping. In fact, on Tuesday (10/9) at 1 pm there will be a cover crop session, and on November 3 at 10 am there will be a lasagna (sheet-composting) construction session.
The garden is located behind St Matthews Church at 4110 River Road. These projects and general maintenance of the garden require some tilling and soil preparation. If any neighbor would like to donate a working rototiller to one of the garden partners (St Matthews Church, Santa Clara Community Organization, or Huerto de la Familia) it would be of great assistance. It may be a tax deductible donation. Please contact Peter at 541-321-0798 for details.
