SCCO Meeting this Thursday, the 7th – Road Construction Update and Presentation on Birds in the Fall

Update on Santa Clara Road Construction and West Bank Path

Reed Dunbar from the City of Eugene will be updating us on the construction at River Road and Hunsaker as well as future plans for the West Bank Bike Path.

Fall and winter changes in wild birds and how the changes impact which foods you should offer.

One of the most entertaining speakers in the state will be presenting information about the changes in birds in the fall

Birds in the Fall and Winter
Presented by Dan Gleason

With the arrival of Fall, we begin to see changes in the birds that visit your feeders. Some birds, like Black-capped Chickadees are present throughout the year, but in Fall and Winter, they become more prominent and easily-seen at your feeders.

Dark-eyed Juncos also become more obviously visible to people, as well.

But, there are also many birds that do not breed in the Willamette Valley, so are not here in Spring and Summer, but make this their home for the winter.

We will help you look at some of the birds found here in Fall and Winter and we will look at why some changes occur within birds and how that affects their actions at your feeders. Many birds change their diet, and these changes affect what you will see. Such changes also have an impact on what foods you might best offer birds and who will likely come to your feeders.

Join us as we focus on our cooler weather bird neighbors!

Dan Gleason, Bio 2023
Dan Gleason and his wife, Barbara, own the Wild Birds Unlimited stores in Eugene. He held a faculty position in the University of Oregon Biology Department for over 30 years, retiring in 2004, and taught Field Ornithology each summer during his UO tenure and for a number of years thereafter. Dan is the author of two books about birds, completed after he retired.

His column, Backyard Habitats ran monthly for over 10 years in the Register Guard until an ownership change in 2018. He has been an invited guest speaker at schools, clubs and organizations for many years. The Gleasons now lead bird outings through the McKenzie River Trust, specializing in their trips for folks with various types of challenges, from mobility to vision or others. They also hold bird outings and lectures through their stores, as well.

Dan and Barbara were long-time board members of several bird-related Oregon organizations and they were long-time volunteers at Cascades Raptor Center in Eugene.

Dan’s speaking engagements and store bird walks took a hiatus in 2019 as he fought AML leukemia. He is still with us, although his vision and balance suffered permanent changes. His sense of humor and hearing still work fine, however.

Emergency Preparedness Resources Inventory

How do I start to prepare for emergencies?

Ready NW Eugene has compiled links and contact information in one document to help each of us to continue our journey to becoming informed and “emergency prepared.” The document is the Ready NW Eugene Emergency Preparedness Resources Inventory (v. 8/26/23).

The Inventory’s focus on emergency preparedness and disaster recovery is arranged in four major sections:

1.  Foundational Emergency Preparedness Sites
2.  Emergency Preparedness Tools, Programs, and Resources (including local)
3.  Emergency Specific Resources (including local): Fires, Air Quality and Weather, Earthquake, Volcanic Eruptions, Dam Safety and/or Flooding, Pandemic, Power Outages, and Toxic Chemical Spill/Leak/Fuel Tank Storage
4.  Other Eugene Neighborhood Organization Emergency Planning

You can access the Inventory two ways:

1.     The Google Docs link: https://tinyurl.com/EmPrepInventory

2.     For a PDF copy: Email us at ReadyNWEugene@gmail.com

Thank you for your interest in emergency preparedness. Please give us your suggestions and comments so we can continue to improve the Resource Inventory document. Also, you can email us to be added to our distribution list at ReadyNWEugene@gmail.com
