13th Annual Wildflower Celebration – May 4th – Awbrey Park

Join the fun at the Awbrey Park Wildflower Celebration on Saturday, May 4th from 11 am to 2 pm. The park is located at 4291 River Road. Take a self-guided tour and discover native flowers, shrubs, and trees. The Friends of Awbrey Park will be stationed throughout the park to help you find trillium, lupine, red Columbine, bleeding heart, violets, fairy bells, false Solomon’s Seal, Oregon myrtle, and much, much more. Other items to look forward to:

  • Live Music – Santa Clara’s own Tim Foelker and the group The Nostalgics
  • Treasure Hunt – Search for native plants and earn a native plant while supplies last. Plants are provided by the City of Eugene and the Buford Park Native Plant Nursery.
  • Rock Painting – Rocks and paint provided. You make up your design.
  • Kids games
  • Horseshoes

Meet Santa Clara organizations and learn about their initiatives:

  • The Santa Clara Community Organization – Find out the kind of topics that the SCCO presents at monthly meetings (you can attend SCCO meetings in person or via Google Meets)
  • The Santa Clara Community Foundation – The SCCF is a 501(c)3 non-profit that supports several projects including renovating the old (1901) schoolhouse on River Loop 2 and returning Hileman Landing to a more natural state.
  • Santa Clara’s Social Justice Committee – Learn what the SJC is doing to foster and sustain a neighborhood environment that is diverse, inclusive, safe, and welcoming.
  • Lane County Master Gardeners mobile plant clinic will be available to answer questions.
  • The Irving Grange will give an update about their new mural project on the side of their building (1011 Irvington Dr)
  • Boy Scout Troop 182 – Thank the young men who have helped chip our trails for many years and been responsible for the flourishing natives on ‘Boy Scout Bank’
  • CERTEugene EMCOMM, and Ready Northwest will be at the event to give important information about Community Emergency Response and Emergency Communication. Learn about skills needed for fire safety, disaster medical operations, emergency communication, and a lot more.
  • Meet the Friends of Awbrey Park. The Friends just completed their 16th year of improving the park. If you haven’t been to the park since late 2015, it is time to visit the park again. The city put in a new bridge to replace a slippery log. The bridge makes it safe to walk to the small forest in the east part of the park.

Bring a picnic. Children are more than welcome. The park features two playground areas (one for 2-5 years old and one for 6-12 years), a large playfield, a pollinator garden, Spring Creek and a small forest where you will find woodpeckers, mallards, newts, and salamanders.

For more information, please contact Kelsey Irvine, Native Plant/ Waterways Volunteer Coordinator, at 541-228-5349 or KIrvine@eugene-or.gov .

Public Safety In Our Neighborhood – A special SCCO meeting on Thursday, May 2nd

Public safety is a frequent concern at our SCCO meetings, so we have decided to replace the May SCCO meeting with a public forum on this topic. Note that the location and time of our monthly meeting have been changed for this important issue.

Public safety is more than just policing. How do the providers work together to keep us safe? Where are the gaps in the services? Who falls through the cracks and why? How can we help? A conversation with Eugene Police Department, Lane County Sheriff’s Office, CAHOOTS, Mobile Crisis Service of Lane County, and Western Lane Crisis Response.

There will be five presentations. After the presentations, there will be time for questions and comments. Questions or comments will be limited to two minutes.

Featured Topic: Dodging Winter Disaster on Eugene’s Roads

With: Marion Suitor Barnes, City of Eugene Public Works Department

January’s ice storm was a big challenge for lifeline providers to maintain or restore services in the City of Eugene. Most did pretty well! The majority of power outages were brief; telephone, internet and cable interruptions were relatively minor, and city streets were open to many vehicles in a manner of days, not weeks.

This month we’ll take a look at how the City of Eugene prepares and responds to extreme weather conditions, focusing on how it keeps streets passable for emergency services as well as more ordinary household needs. Would a more severe storm have led to a different outcome, putting the more vulnerable members of our community into life-threatening situations? What tasks should neighborhood emergency preparedness groups expect to be called on to provide when winter weather closes down our transportation system?

This month’s meeting will also feature a short report from the annual conference of the Partners In Emergency Preparedness, a Washington state coalition of agencies and private-sector providers, that took place April 2-4 in Tacoma. Our reporter, Randy Prince, attended a FEMA course on making community organizations effective in reaching the public through their existing connections.

7:00 Short Introductions In Chat: Name, Neighborhood Association, Affiliation
7:10 Eugene’s Roads and the City’s response to the January 2024 Ice Storm – Marion Suitor Barnes, Eugene Public Works
