January 30th Presentation on ‘Seismic Safety of NW Eugene’s Bridges and Overpasses’

Please plan on attending this Zoom presentation and discussion on a topic that could affect all of us, especially in the Eugene NW Region.

Seismic Safety of NW Eugene’s Bridges and Overpasses
Tuesday, January 30, 2024
6:30 – 8:00 PM

https://tinyurl.com/SeismicSafety

Earthquakes can cause bridges and overpasses to fail, especially if they are not seismically engineered to withstand those risks. In an earthquake disaster, damage to our NW Region bridges and overpasses would affect our ability to evacuate and to receive aid and supplies.

This presentation will be open to anyone to attend, but should be of particular interest to residents and businesses in NW Eugene region neighborhoods, such as Bethel, River Road, and Santa Clara.

  • Learn about the current seismic resilience of our NW Eugene bridges and overpasses as well as any plans to seismically retrofit our nearby bridges and overpasses.
  • This will be a great opportunity to ask emergency preparedness/readiness questions related to this topic.

We are pleased to welcome presenters: Trish Sharma (Eugene Transportation Planner) and Sierra Anderson (Eugene’s Emergency Manager). There will be time for questions and answers. The meeting will be recorded and posted on the Ready NW Eugene — Emergency Preparedness Team channel on YouTube.com.

SCCO Meeting Presentation from Dec 7 – Santa Clara Water District

Eric Carlson, chair of the Santa Clara Water Board, reviewed when the district was formed and why, its governance structure, how it is funded, what its purpose has been over time, and how it has evolved.

Eric also went over how the district dovetails with other service providers such as EWEB. Eric also covers what he sees as the future of the district – its purpose, financial viability, and whether there is an eventual plan for its retirement or if it is essential moving forward.

Here is a link to the presentation. There is also a video of Committee Reports from the December Meeting.

Saturday, Dec. 2, Earthquake Response Exercise, 10 AM—Noon, Fire Station 2, Eugene.

Hello Ready NW Eugene neighbors,

This Saturday morning several Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTS) will be conducting an earthquake response exercise in Eugene across the street from Fire Station 2 on 1705 West 2nd Avenue.

Non-CERTS will be allowed to attend, observe the exercise, and ask questions!

A November 30, 2023 KLCC article states:

“A regional earthquake response exercise will be held Saturday morning in downtown Eugene.

Sierra Anderson is the emergency manager for the City of Eugene. She told KLCC that several Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTS) will be across the street from Fire Station 2 on 1705 West 2nd Avenue.

It’ll be a search and rescue scenario for a commercial building following a Cascadian event, which Anderson said is important training.

“It’s a good place for folks to start when they’re looking at this big preparedness pie and how to start eating it, right?” said Anderson. “It gives folks kind of the basic skills for emergency response. CERT is also neighborhood based.

“So what it does is it helps to connect folks within the neighborhood that they live in and kind of assess how they can help each other during major disasters.”

Other community emergency response teams will be present including from Benton and Linn counties, and Cottage Grove.

People can also observe and ask questions during the exercise from 10am to noon.

Amateur radio to play big part in post-quake communications

When a major earthquake hits the Pacific Northwest, officials say ham radio operators will be part of their response.

Anderson said their CERT has a group that works with amateur radio, to assist in keeping communications going with the Emergency Operations Center once an anticipated Cascadian event occurs.

“It’s a very robust, very well put together team and they assist us in times of emergency with our ham radios if needed,” added Anderson. “They work in our City Emergency Operation Center, doing ham radio call outs.

“We had an exercise last month and it was really interesting to see how well the neighborhood’s work together and their processes for radio communication through times of emergency.”

With an anticipated intensity of 9.0 on the Richter scale, a Cascadian quake is expected to disrupt transportation, power, and supply chains for weeks, if not longer.

Communication is seen as a vital way to keep people and responders connected in times of disaster.”

Hope to see you there!
