Santa Clara Community Foundation: BottleDrop Give! Earth Week Bonus

Many of you have taken advantage of BottleDrop Give! to support the Foundation’s efforts in the neighborhood. We’ve gained hundreds of dollars since we registered last year. We like to encourage more participation, especially now, during the upcoming Earth Week Give bonus period. Every returnable can or bottle will earn an extra 20% between April 10 – 22.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

Contact foundation@santaclaracommunity.org (or call 541-689-8897) if,

  • … you don’t already have a Foundation-labeled blue bag and would like one (or several, we have plenty of bags),
  • … you have a bunch of returnables (or full blue bags) and would like someone to pick them up.
  • Plus, you can access your regular green bag BottleDrop account to donate part of your balance to The Santa Clara Community Foundation.

P.S. If you have any blue bags with the Foundation’s QR-code label sticker, you can scan the bag’s code at any redemption center drop-off to open the door and drop off your bag.

Remember to take action between April 10th and Earth Day, April 22nd, so the neighborhood can take advantage of this great 20% boost in giving through BottleDrop Give!

Thank you! And be sure to visit the Foundation table at the 12th Annual Awbrey Park Wildflower Celebration, April 29th, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.

River Road Community Organization hosting Candidates forum Monday, April 10

You may want to join the River Road meeting next Monday to learn more about candidates running for various positions in the May elections. From our friends at the RRCO:

Community Meeting April 10 at 7
Hybrid meeting-  In person at 1055 River Road or on ZOOM

https://us06web.zoom.us/j/84662488247?pwd=aW5hSC9hWHpyYXFzT0lDVEQrTGlkUT09
Meeting ID: 846 6248 8247 Passcode: RRCO-Gen

Elections: City Council, 4J School Board, and Levies.

At the April 10th RRCO General Meeting we will cover the Eugene Ward 7 candidates, 4J School Board candidates, Lane County Public Safety Levy, and Eugene Parks Levy in that order.  We will give each of the participating candidates up to three minutes to speak about themself and their candidacy followed by a Q&A with each of the candidates. A spokesperson for the county public safety levy has been invited and the Healing Not Handcuffs coalition will offer an alternate perspective.
The audience will be invited to write their questions for the candidates on cards and in the chat.  These will be collected and vetted by two neutral board members and asked by that team. Candidates will have up to one minute to respond to each question.
As usual, we expect everyone to be neighborly and courteous to our guests and to the agenda.

Here is the outline of our General Meeting:

  • The participating candidates for Ward 7 City Council will randomly take turns speaking for up to three minutes about themselves and their candidacy. Then the candidates will have up to one minute to respond to each question from the audience.
  • The same process will be followed by up to three minutes each for the participating candidates for 4J School Board positions.
  • We then will have a proponent and opponent of the County Public Safety Levy each spend up to 3 minutes to discuss their position on the levy
  • Finally, we have asked a Lane County League of Women Voters to give us a non-partisan explanation of the Eugene Parks levy.

4J School Board to make a decision soon whether to retrofit the current North Eugene High building or tear it down

From our friends at the River Road Community Organization:

During the February 13th RRCO General Meeting several neighbors expressed concern the lack of information about the upcoming 4J School Board decision on the future of the existing North Eugene High School Building and lack of information about how they can provide feedback. The RRCO Board sent a letter on February 28th to the 4J Board Chair Maya Rabasa and Superintendent Andy Dey requesting that they provide an information/feedback session for area parents and neighbors.

We asked for information from district staff about the pros and cons of rehabilitating the building along with projected costs. We also asked to know what options are available for both siting and program development of Yugin Gankeun Japanese Immersion School and Kelly Middle School. We asked to have the session in the North Eugene attendance area and that they provide information on how people can provide feedback to the decision makers.

When we had no response to our request by March 15th, we resent the same request to the entire School Board. Board Members promised at that evening’s School Board meeting that the session that we requested would take place. However, it appears that this session will not come to pass so here is the information we can provide you from 4J’s website (https://www.4j.lane.edu/2023/02/4j-weighs-options-for-original-north-eugene-building/).

“The estimated cost to retrofit the old building for a new program is $30 million. That estimate includes expenses for deferred maintenance, upgrades to meet current district standards for school buildings, and required city system development charges. Added to this estimate would be any renovations of the building to accommodate a new program. Retaining the old building also leaves the new North Eugene High School with about half of the field space of other district high schools, leaving less green space in the region for sports and community recreational uses.”

“Demolishing the original building and installing fields on its footprint is estimated to cost $12 million. This option would provide substantial credit toward the system development charges for the new building. It would add two grass soccer-sized fields side by side, bringing the new North Eugene High School’s field area in alignment with other district high schools.

4J is accepting questions through its Let’s Talk page to help inform the board’s discussion and final decision. District staff will answer those questions, as well as post the questions and responses on the district website. Staff also will forward the questions to the board for their consideration.
