Santa Clara Douglas-firs Urban Logging Project

In 2019, Lane County decided to remove some old-growth Douglas-fir trees from along River Road in north Santa Clara. SCCO negotiated with the county to preserve the logs and deliver them to a local small sawmill to be turned into timbers and lumber for the benefit of the Santa Clara community. We will be coordinating and documenting those projects from this site and on other Santa Clara social media.

Santa Clara Community Park Master Plan Update

Hello and thank you for staying in touch with Engage Eugene and with our Santa Clara Park master planning process.  We are in interesting and challenging times with the current stay at home restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.  Our first concern is in keeping our community safe so the future of community engagement may look different in the months ahead.  The workshop report and survey results from the first public meeting are available now on Engage Eugene in the Santa Clara Community Park project page:  https://engage.eugene-or.gov/santaclarapark

All meeting materials will also be posted on the website along with a second survey to get feedback on the preliminary design.  And for those that are not connected virtually, we’ll be posting at kiosks in the park and exploring more opportunities and tools to reach out.   In the meantime, the 1st survey results and 1st workshop report are posted here:  https://engage.eugene-or.gov/   In general, the survey from the first workshop shows a high level of interest in the community for many of the typical elements that we see in a community park, including a playground, restroom, shade, open lawn, courts, flexible event space and picnic facilities.  There is also a high regard for natural areas and trails.  The concept options we are developing reflect these priorities.

Free Meals for Youth

Summer Lunch Program

There are many sites around Eugene offering free meals for youth either through Food For Lane County or Eugene District 4J . Click here for a full list. Awbrey Park Elementary School is the Santa Clara site. (District 4J will offer meals at Awbrey Park Elementary School through September 4th.)

Meals at Awbrey Park Elementary are available Monday through Thursday between 11 am and noon. Meal bags include breakfast and lunch, including hot options most days. Thursday distribution includes up to four meals per bag, with items intended to be consumed immediately and other items intended to be re-heated or cooked over the weekend. There is an option for milk or soy milk.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Meals are for ANY child age 18 and under
  • Meals are provided at no charge
  • No income requirements apply, and students do not have to qualify for free or reduced-price school meals
  • Children do not need to be present to receive a meal
  • Children do not need to be students in 4J
  • Children do not need to attend school at the site where picking up meals
  • Meals are a grab-n-go style, with both breakfast and lunch available at the same time
  • Food supplies are sufficient to provide meals based on typical participation
  • Social distancing rules must be observed at all times—staff, students and families picking up meals must maintain at least 6 feet of distance from any person who is not a member of their immediate household

Free Food Boxes

Awbrey Park Elementary School is also a location for food box pick up on Wednesday’s between 11 am and noon. The food box program is part of the USDA’s Farmers-to-Families Food Box Program. Three types of boxes will be available depending on location: one that prioritizes fresh produce, a second that provides a mix of dairy products, and a third that includes precooked meat. Make sure to ask the attendants at Awbrey Park when the following week’s delivery will occur. The delivery day and time may change on occasion.

Santa Clara Community Garden Summer Update 2020

Composting Activities – The following compost activities are taking place in the SCCG Compost Zone, immediately north of the metal shed.  Craig, Matthew, George, Bonnie, Mary and Peter have been the participants in the past few months.  Any gardeners may join the composting projects listed below by talking to any of the composters, or let Peter know by email (thurstop@gmail.com).

-The Primary Compost Crew includes Craig, George and Matthew.  They have been processing the piles of leaves and mixing them with veggies from PC market, coffee grounds Bonnie provides, and veg from the garden to create compost for everyone to use this coming year.  In the process they are also creating three new garden plots for 2021.

-The #1 Collection Bin was turned for the first time after several months of tossing whole veggies in and covering with a few leaves.  The temperatures in the bin started out around 120 degrees, dropped to around 100 for more than a month, then dropped off to the 80s.  We didn’t know what would be there, but it looked good.  So it was combined with some other compost and we will be tracking temperatures, which will be recorded on the boards attached to each bin.  These three collection bins are on the south edge of the compost zone.

-Fall Garden Clean up – We are considering ways to improve the compost materials collected from the garden in the Fall for use in the compost builds.  This means separating the materials more.  We’ll move the collection bins for garden veg (vines, stalks, etc) to the compost zone.  For now, continue to put clean veg material from your plots in a bin (or pile) west of the garden shed.  Look for more details and signs to come.

-We need egg shells to improve the calcium in the compost mixes.  Please let Craig or Peter know if you have a source of egg shells and we will set up a process for drying and using them.

Winter Gardening–Craig is planning to make Planting Mix from the Compost.  A table will be set up next to the lasagna bed to screen planting mix, and make it available for gardeners to start Fall gardens.  There is seed (kale, lettuce, spinach, broccoli) available for gardeners to start Fall gardens (talk to Craig), with the hope that some of the fresh produce will make it to the food pantry, too.  A winter garden Demo area will be set up next to the planting mix table, on the west edge of the compost zone

Self-guided Tour of the Compost Zone – The plan is to show gardeners the differences in composting processes.  Some signs have been posted on the lasagna bed, collection bins, and compost piles.  We are planning to update these signs and prepare an information flyer to guide people around the Compost Zone.

Funding for Neighborhood Plan Actions Being Decided—Thurs., July 9th, 11:30 AM!

Eugene Transportation staff have applied for funding for a few Santa Clara projects that are related to the Neighborhood Plan Actions included below. The Central Lane Metropolitan Policy Committee will be making a decision about funding on Thursday July, 9 from 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM. These meetings are open to the public and include time for public comment at the beginning of the meeting. For more information on how to participate or watch the meeting, visit this website.

5.1.3     a.     Complete the connection of the West Bank Bike Path through Santa Clara from Beltline north to the UGB and beyond.

b.     Implement redesign of Beaver-Hunsaker to ensure safety for all modes of transportation.

5.3.2 Provide safe access from Division to Fred Meyer and Santa Clara Shopping Center to make access effective and safe for all modes of transportation.
