Urban Reserves Open House Coming Soon!!!

Happy new year! There are lots of exciting things happening in 2020 for Urban Reserves, the first of which is a series of public events this month.

Urban Reserves staff will hold three open houses to present the suitability analysis results and answer property owners’ specific questions. We have mailed postcards to all property owners of suitable land within the Urban Reserves study area inviting them to attend, and these open houses are open to anyone. Each open house will include a brief presentation from staff, sharing updates on the analysis and what the next steps are for developing Urban Reserves options, followed by time to browse information and talk to project staff directly.

The dates and locations are below. All open houses will have the same information, so attend whichever is most convenient.

January 9, 6-8 pm, Meadow View School, 1855 Legacy St
January 14, 6-8 pm, Kennedy Middle School, 2200 Bailey Hill Rd
January 22, 6-8 pm, Irving Grange, 1011 Irvington Dr

Forum Event: What To Do When the Power Goes Out!

A Eugene Neighborhood’s Preparedness Event

Electric Power Lines Down

The Eugene Neighborhood’s Preparedness Network invites everyone to attend the first emergency preparedness forum for 2020 on January 11th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.  This event, “What To Do When the Power Goes Out!” is a free event that will provide attendees with the following information:

  • How wind and weather can interrupt your essential electric service in Eugene-Springfield.
  • Tools and techniques for getting through an extended outage at your home.
  • Problem-solving session for special needs in a no-power situation.
  • Networking with other preparedness activists.

The event will be held at the Hilyard Community Center at 2580 Hilyard in Eugene.  The event is part of a series of events that the Eugene Neighborhood’s Preparedness Network will be hosting at different locations around Eugene over the course of the coming year. Please join the Santa Clara community in getting the information necessary to be prepared for the next electric outage.  For more information or if you have questions please contact Randy Prince at 541-345-3306 or David Monk at 541-520-9572 or leave a comment and I’ll get back to you as quickly as I can.

We hope to see a large group of Santa Clara residents at the meeting to help us prepare for the next ice storm or other event that results in the loss of electricity.

Reducing Environmental Impact

Creating a Happy, Carbon-Free Community

On Thursday, January 2, 2020 at 7:00 pm, the Santa Clara Community Organization (SCCO) will host a presentation and discussion at Messiah Lutheran Church, 3280 River Road, Eugene on the subject of “Creating a Happy, Carbon-Free Community.” Steve Goldman will present a talk about climate change and things people in our community can do to create positive change and a brighter, happier, and more sustainable future for our city and the world.

Many people are aware that carbon emissions are continuing to rise and our planet is continuing to get hotter. Yet, there are many simple things each of us can do that will lessen our impact on the planet and create positive change. The Eugene Carbon-Free Challenge contains a list of 64 such actions. We will be discussing some of these actions on January 2, as well as other ways to make Santa Clara a healthier, happier, and more vibrant community. As Charles Montgomery says in his book Happy City, a happy city is a place where people interact with each other in positive ways.

About the speaker: Steve Goldman has spent over 30 years restoring rivers and wetlands and revegetating disturbed lands, including 20 years managing the natural resource programs of the California Tahoe Conservancy. Since moving to Eugene in 2008, he has served on the Eugene Neighborhood Leaders Council’s Committee on Sustainability, which organized three well-attended Green Neighbors Fairs. Steve also teaches Nonviolent Communication and is a regular volunteer listener at the Empathy Tent at the Eugene Saturday Market.
