Luper Pioneer Cemetery Open Memorial Day Weekend

NEWS RELEASE for Memorial Day Calendars
May 20, 2024

SUBJECT: Luper Pioneer Cemetery Open Memorial Day Weekend – May 25-26-27

CONTACT: Peter Thurston, President, Luper Cemetery Inc. 541-321-0798

Luper Pioneer Cemetery will be open 9 am to 4 pm, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, May 25, 26, 27. On Memorial Day (5/27) old-time acoustical music by The Poodle Creek Pickers will be presented at 11 AM and 1:30 PM. All three days there will be self-guided tours of the cemetery with interpretive signs describing the history of the southern Willamette Valley.

From 12:30 to 1:30 there will be a “Letters from the Trail” presentation by Karen Rainsong of the Singing Creek Educational Center. This will be a family-friendly presentation with a talk by Mrs. Annabelle Smith of the Oregon Trail. The stories begin in 1856, and Mrs. Smith just arrived last Fall after a six-month journey overland with her family on the wagon train, and has stories (kid friendly) to tell about the trip.

Mrs. Smith will have some letters to hand out, written by children on the Oregon Trail, detailing their thoughts, feelings and experiences along the journey. Receive your own letter to take home! (The letters are fictional, written by Karen Rainsong, based on journals and historical artifacts from the trail.) “

Luper Cemetery (also known as Irving or Baker Cemetery) was founded in the mid-1800s. Eighteen of the people interred at Luper Cemetery arrived in 1853, by way of the Oregon Trail and the Free Emigrant Road across central Oregon. Over 160 people are buried at Luper Cemetery. Self-guided tours may be taken anytime (Saturday, Sunday, and Monday).

Please check www.lupercemetery.com for more historical information about the cemetery, and other resources.

DIRECTIONS to Luper Cemetery: From Eugene, take River Rd. north to Beacon Drive, on the north boundary of Santa Clara, and follow signs west. From Junction City, take River Rd. south, turn west onto Beacon Drive and travel about a ½ mile to a white metal gate, on the north side of Beacon Drive. Proceed through the gate approximately 1/2 mile to the parking lot and cemetery entrance. The cemetery may be accessed every day from dawn to dusk by walking the half-mile gravel road from West Beacon Drive to the cemetery.

13th Annual Wildflower Celebration – May 4th – Awbrey Park

Join the fun at the Awbrey Park Wildflower Celebration on Saturday, May 4th from 11 am to 2 pm. The park is located at 4291 River Road. Take a self-guided tour and discover native flowers, shrubs, and trees. The Friends of Awbrey Park will be stationed throughout the park to help you find trillium, lupine, red Columbine, bleeding heart, violets, fairy bells, false Solomon’s Seal, Oregon myrtle, and much, much more. Other items to look forward to:

  • Live Music – Santa Clara’s own Tim Foelker and the group The Nostalgics
  • Treasure Hunt – Search for native plants and earn a native plant while supplies last. Plants are provided by the City of Eugene and the Buford Park Native Plant Nursery.
  • Rock Painting – Rocks and paint provided. You make up your design.
  • Kids games
  • Horseshoes

Meet Santa Clara organizations and learn about their initiatives:

  • The Santa Clara Community Organization – Find out the kind of topics that the SCCO presents at monthly meetings (you can attend SCCO meetings in person or via Google Meets)
  • The Santa Clara Community Foundation – The SCCF is a 501(c)3 non-profit that supports several projects including renovating the old (1901) schoolhouse on River Loop 2 and returning Hileman Landing to a more natural state.
  • Santa Clara’s Social Justice Committee – Learn what the SJC is doing to foster and sustain a neighborhood environment that is diverse, inclusive, safe, and welcoming.
  • Lane County Master Gardeners mobile plant clinic will be available to answer questions.
  • The Irving Grange will give an update about their new mural project on the side of their building (1011 Irvington Dr)
  • Boy Scout Troop 182 – Thank the young men who have helped chip our trails for many years and been responsible for the flourishing natives on ‘Boy Scout Bank’
  • CERTEugene EMCOMM, and Ready Northwest will be at the event to give important information about Community Emergency Response and Emergency Communication. Learn about skills needed for fire safety, disaster medical operations, emergency communication, and a lot more.
  • Meet the Friends of Awbrey Park. The Friends just completed their 16th year of improving the park. If you haven’t been to the park since late 2015, it is time to visit the park again. The city put in a new bridge to replace a slippery log. The bridge makes it safe to walk to the small forest in the east part of the park.

Bring a picnic. Children are more than welcome. The park features two playground areas (one for 2-5 years old and one for 6-12 years), a large playfield, a pollinator garden, Spring Creek and a small forest where you will find woodpeckers, mallards, newts, and salamanders.

For more information, please contact Kelsey Irvine, Native Plant/ Waterways Volunteer Coordinator, at 541-228-5349 or KIrvine@eugene-or.gov .
