Citizen Radar Program – concerned about speeding traffic?

From Eugene’s weekly Community Bulletin:

Are you concerned about speeding in your neighborhood? If so, consider joining our Citizen Radar Program. This is an educational program and doesn’t involve enforcement or traffic citations.

How it works:

In our Citizen Radar Program, volunteers monitor vehicle speeds using a department issued radar gun. In the event a speeder is tracked on radar traveling 10 miles per hour or more over the speed limit, the volunteers (there needs to be two people) will work the radar unit (this will be the person who went through the training) and also document the license plate number, vehicle description, location and time. After the data is captured, a letter is then sent to the registered owner(s) of the vehicle. The letters are of escalating urgency regarding the vehicle speed and location. The third letter (which comes from the Eugene Chief of Police) includes reference to a possible visit by a Traffic Enforcement Officer, should the vehicle be tracked speeding a fourth time.

Prior to participating, citizens attend a 2-hour Radar class, where they are trained by a Traffic Enforcement Officer to understand basic radar technology and science, how to use the radar guns, and safety while out on the streets. The data gathered is returned to the Citizen Radar Program Manager Jeff Blondé and the license/vehicle description are verified to ensure accuracy before a letter is sent out.

Participants are encouraged to use the radar guns in their own neighborhoods. You commit only to the time you can spare using the radar gun. Get involved and be a part of the solution! If you have any questions about the Citizen Radar Program, or to sign up for the next 2-hour Radar class, contact Citizen Radar Program Manager Jeff Blondé at 541-682-8332.

Eugene’s Rest Stop Program! [video]

The City Manager’s Office would like to share a video that was recently produced about Eugene’s Rest Stop Program which works to provide safe and legal places to sleep for people in our community who are experiencing homelessness. Rest stops allow up to 20 people to sleep overnight in tents or Conestoga huts on certain sites individually approved by the City Council. Each site must be managed by a site provider that signs an agreement with the City to supervise the site with certain provisions.

If you have any questions or would like to find out how your neighborhood could get involved, please contact Regan Watjus, (541) 682-8442

Luper Pioneer Cemetery Reopened to the Public

LuperLuper Cemetery is again open for visitors from dawn until dusk. Ron Robinson and the Scorpion Crew from the High Cascades Forest Volunteers offered their services to cut the hazardous trees damaged by recent ice storms. Several other volunteers also participated. The crew of at least a dozen persons did the work on Thursday, January 19, 2017.

The Board of Directors of Luper Cemetery is grateful for the support and extends our sincere thanks. A work party is still planned, weather permitting, for February 4, 2017 at 10am to continue the cleanup of debris. Volunteers are welcome to help! A dedication ceremony for the benches that were installed as part of Kyle Sorenson’s Eagle Scout project is scheduled for 1pm also on February 4th.
