Santa Clara Cover Crops Growing

There are now three cover corp demonstrations at the Santa Clara Community Garden: one of peas and clover planted on bare ground, another planted in the new area for plots, and a third planted in an existing garden plot. This last one has many different mixes of cover crop seeds. There will be more information about the results in Winter months, and we plan to provide opportunities for gardeners to cover crop their own plots in coming months to improve the soil. Take a look at the cover crops as they grow. On November 3rd more soil improvement information will be presented when a Lasagna compost will be built. This workshop will be from 10 am to noon.  Contact Peter (thurstop@gmail.com) for more information.

Rototiller Needed for Community Garden

Santa Clara Community Garden regularly sponsors soil building workshops, including composting and cover cropping. In fact, on Tuesday (10/9) at 1 pm there will be a cover crop session, and on November 3 at 10 am there will be a lasagna (sheet-composting) construction session.

The garden is located behind St Matthews Church at 4110 River Road. These projects and general maintenance of the garden require some tilling and soil preparation. If any neighbor would like to donate a working rototiller to one of the garden partners (St Matthews Church, Santa Clara Community Organization, or Huerto de la Familia) it would be of great assistance. It may be a tax deductible donation. Please contact Peter at 541-321-0798 for details.

Free Compost Workshops Coming Up

NEWS RELEASE – For Immediate Release and Community Calendars

September 23, 2018

Contact: Peter Thurston, 541-321-0798

Subject: Santa Clara Community Garden/Compost Workshop Schedule

Santa Clara Community Garden and OSU Master Gardener Compost Specialists started a series of free composting workshops earlier this year and we are now down to the last two workshops: September 29, 10 to Noon and November 3, 10 to Noon. Master Gardeners Bonnie Houston, Tim Foelker, and Peter Thurston will guide these workshops on how to improve your garden soil.

The garden is located at 4110 River Road, behind St. Matthews Church, about 2 miles north of Beltline in the Santa Clara neighborhood. People are welcome to just show up and find out about composting. Here are the two workshop dates and the subjects:

September 29 – 10 am to Noon – This free workshop will focus on harvesting and preserving garden produce, and collecting clean compostable materials to keep soil-building going in the winter. We’ll check on recent compost builds, including worm composting, and start a new hot compost pile.

November 3 – Compost Workshop, 10 to Noon – This free workshop will actively build a Lasagna compost, comprised of multiple layers built in the garden bed. Tim Foelker will lead the demonstration on how to improve the soil in your garden by building a layered compost. Lone Oak Park Dog Off Leash Area is Officially OPEN!

Do you ever wish there was a dog park in Santa Clara so you could unleash your furry companions without breaking leash rules at other playgrounds and schoolyards in the area? We’ve got great news for you!

There is now a sanctioned off-leash area for dogs at Lone Oak Park, located off Ross Lane and Lone Oak Ave. Click here for location map (Think near Fred Meyers, right off Division street, behind the EWEB power plant).

Please help us spread the word about the dog park, and join us for a grand opening dog park party this Sunday, September 16th, at noon!

Through the City of Eugene’s Neighborhood Matching Grant process, the Santa Clara Community Organization was able to secure funding and volunteer help to make this Dog Off-Leash Area a reality! The DOLA includes on-site parking, thanks to Delta Sand & Gravel, and a lovely informational kiosk thanks to volunteers Alan Carr and Gary Wildish.

*Please note* The Lone Oak DOLA is not a full amenity dog park, meaning there is no water or trash disposal on-site, so please bring your own water to keep your doggy hydrated, and remember you are responsible for picking up and packing out your pet’s waste.

The SCCO thanks Delta Sand & Gravel, Alan, and Gary for their outstanding and generous contributions to the project!
