Open Garden at Tim & Deneen’s

Save the date: Sunday, February 18th, 2018, 11:00- 4:00
4792 Herman Street, Eugene (N. Santa Clara)
(514) 689-8897

It’s time to cap-off the hugelkulture base that we built up last summer. Now that spring is nigh and the base wood well wetted over the winter, we’re going to pile on layers of soil, compost, straw (and even mushroom spawn), then plant some legumes. Everyone is welcome to visit our Open Garden whether or not you choose to participate in the build. There should be some urban permaculture folks present to spread some knowledge. And there’s likely to be live music on the “Back Porch,” as well. Refreshments, food, and all tools will be provided. Come and join the fun.

Hugelkultur are no-dig raised beds with a difference. They hold moisture, build fertility, maximize surface volume and are great spaces for growing fruit, vegetables and herbs. Hugelkultur, pronounced Hoo-gul-culture, means hill culture or hill mound.”

Community Garden clean up and Compost build- Thursday, 2/15, 2 pm

Santa Clara Gardeners, you are invited to come out on Thursday afternoon (2/15, 2 pm) and clean up your garden bed, mulch it, and compost some of the materials we have been collecting.  The pile of leaves are for mulching.  We will discuss how we are changing the composting process at the garden.  We will have several more composting workshops in coming months.  The garden is located behind St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 4110 River Road (map).

Existing plot members.  You may renew your garden plot for the coming year by sending a check made out to Santa Clara Community Organization (SCCO) for $60.00.  Please let me know if you would like to make other arrangements, or if you are not planning to continue gardening in your plot.  My email is: thurstop@gmail.com .

The check may be sent to: Peter Thurston, 446 Blackfoot Ave., Eugene, OR  97404.

Happy gardening,

Peter

Want to slow down traffic in your neighborhood?

Our friends in the River Road Organization (south of Beltline) have invited Santa Clarians to a brainstorming meeting to help local drivers drive safely.  They already have some starter ideas.  Just guessing by the egg photo, the group must be a lot of fun.  Here’s their invitation from their Facebook site:

What can we, as neighbors, do to encourage safer driving on our residential streets?
Get creative with your neighbors.
Lean about successful strategies used elsewhere.
