Hileman Park Heroes—Launch Day

The Santa Clara Community Foundation has officially adopted Hileman Landing County Park. Tim Foelker (SCCF board president) signed the work plan agreement with Lane County on Thursday, March 23rd, and Saturday, picked up tools for the inaugural Last-Saturday-of-the-Month regular work parties to begin serious park rehabilitation. (Please mark you calendars.)

Of course, we are doing the hard work of invasives removal and cleanup around the entrance. It won’t be long, though, until we can plant some native trees/shrubs and move further into the park. Jerry Finigan (below) won first prize for the largest blackberry-briar root yet!

Some of these blackberry corms have been rooting for many decades.

We had eight volunteers—a great turn-out for an inaugural event—and we engaged with a dozen or so park visitors and, often, their pets. These visitors deserve thanks for the fabulous job of keeping the park clean the last year or so. We filled only a tiny bucket of trash and doo on this day!

Our next event is scheduled for May 27th. We are skipping April 29th, because that is the day of the Awbrey Park Wildflower Celebration. Join the neighborhood there for wildflower tours, info tables, food, music, and fun.

Then join us in May for a shift. We’ll be working from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Choose a time that works best for you. Tell your friends and neighbors, and follow the park’s progress in your media.

Volunteers needed in Santa Clara for Letter Carriers Annual Food Drive

Who? Volunteers from the various neighborhood associations – we have to cover the whole city of Eugene so any help we can get is SO appreciated!

What? People put cans out near their mailboxes for collection by their Letter Carrier. However, most carriers are very overwhelmed by packages these days and some have physical limitations. To alleviate their burden, we send volunteers out with route maps on any routes that the carrier indicates they would like an assist. (During the fall drive, we had something like 30 routes that needed volunteer coverage.)

When? The date is Saturday, May 13th. Can collection can begin as early as 11 am and we typically “close up shop” by about 5-6 pm. We ask volunteers to commit to a route or two, which generally takes a couple of hours (and is much faster and easier when you’re familiar with the area!)

Where? YOUR neighborhood!

Why? Help feed our neighbors in need! This is our largest food drive of the year. This November, this food drive brought in over 70,000 lbs of food, more than doubling the size of any other food drive we do throughout the year. When we have enough volunteers, no food is left behind!

Ready NW Eugene Preparedness Event

Hello Neighbors,

Join us TONIGHT, March 7th from 6:30 – 7:30 pm via zoom to continue Mapping Our Neighborhood in NW Eugene!

The city of Eugene has already identified specific zones that emergency services will use in case evacuation or emergency alerts are needed – https://www.eugene-or.gov/4732/Emergency-Evacuation-Zones.

We’ll be using our March zoom meeting to define these zones in NW Eugene even further, creating smaller breakouts of each zone where neighbors can feel empowered to: 

  • connect with your closest neighbors
  • begin to Map Your Neighborhood
  • create Damage Assessment Teams
  • locate Radio Communicators
